L'eroica - The Road Where the Hero Finds Glory
In 1997,L’Eroica was born in the Tuscan hills of Italy.
Throughout the 1950s and beyond, industrialization spread across the country, and by the 1990s, the small village of Gaiole in Chianti had grown weary. Rural life had faded, depopulation advanced, and the rich pastoral scenery of Tuscany was on the verge of vanishing.
Giancarlo Brocci, a sports journalist and the founder of L’Eroica, felt deep sorrow watching his hometown change. He knew something had to be done. Searching for a way to preserve what remained, he imagined a cycling event—one that would travel the ancient white gravel roads, the strade bianche, on vintage bicycles from a bygone era.
Riders would sweat, ride through dust and mud, and conquer difficult terrain. Under open skies and surrounded by the vast fields of Tuscany, they would reconnect with the traditions, culture, and spirit preserved by those before them.
“The beauty of fatigue and the thrill of conquest.”
This was the idea: to embrace hardship, to find joy in the struggle, and to honor the heroic spirit of cycling’s golden age.
From humble beginnings, L’Eroica has grown into a global movement. But the road still begins in Gaiole.
A road where every rider, with grit and heart, can become a hero.
