Eroica for the environment: sustainability rides with us at the IX Edition of Eroica Montalcino
In 2025, as part of the IX edition of Eroica Montalcino, the commitment to the environment takes center stage once again. Eroica proudly renews its initiative “Eroica for the Environment”, a project that brings together all the concrete actions aimed at raising awareness among participants, partners, and the community about the protection of the landscape and the white roads that, since 1997, have told the story of our passion.
Riding in Eroica Montalcino is not just a sporting act or a nostalgic tribute to the cycling races of the past — it is a conscious gesture. Every vintage bicycle, every wool jersey brought back to life, every small item we’ve reused tells the story of circular economy applied to cycling. This is how the event becomes a model of true sustainability, fueled by small actions and big visions.
Sustainable actions of Eroica Montalcino 2025
During the IX edition, various initiatives will highlight the environmental commitment that defines the Eroica experience:
- Waste sorting at refreshment points, in collaboration with Sei Toscana: dedicated bins for plastic, paper, and general waste, along with educational efforts to promote correct waste management along the entire route.
- "Adotta un Chilometro", a project born from the partnership with Terre Cablate, involving local associations from the 17 municipalities crossed by the permanent routes of Eroica Montalcino and L’Eroica. It’s a shared initiative to care for the land: 290 kilometers of white roads monitored, protected, and valued by those who live them daily.
- Official race number bib made from recycled fabric, produced by Roy Roger’s using eco-friendly ink: a small but powerful symbol of commitment that participants will wear on their jersey, found inside the technical race packet.
- Clean energy: all event electricity comes from certified renewable sources, minimizing the environmental impact of logistics and services.
- Local and organic food supply chain: the refreshment stations and race packet focus on local culinary excellence, with attention to quality, seasonality, and sustainability.
- UCI Climate Action Charter: Eroica proudly adheres to the Union Cycliste Internationale’s charter for reducing the environmental impact of cycling events by 2030.
- The Sustainable Cycling Manifesto: created in 2024 with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) — a guide with ten small actions and good habits that make the bicycle a powerful ally for the planet.
Activities with the Ministry of the Environment
This shared vision between Eroica and MASE will be reflected in several initiatives during Eroica Montalcino:
- A special team of Under 25 cyclists, riding vintage bicycles and wearing wool jerseys with the Ministry’s logo, will be ambassadors of the Sustainable Cycling Manifesto and active participants in Adotta un Chilometro, caring for assigned sections of the route. Through small but meaningful gestures, they will help with waste sorting along the route — showing how environmental care begins with each road traveled.
- The presentation of the printed edition of “I Percorsi Ritrovati”, made in collaboration with MASE in 2024 and printed on certified paper, will be formally handed over to institutional representatives from the 17 municipalities involved in Terra Eroica’s permanent routes, as well as to representatives of national parks, geomining parks, and protected areas featured in the study.
- During the press conference for the book, work on the Eroica Sustainability Manual — aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda goals — will be officially announced. The manual will be released at the October edition of L’Eroica 2025.
An event that looks ahead
The IX edition of Eroica Montalcino is not just a celebration of vintage cycling — it is also a hub of environmental awareness, where participants learn, share, and take action to leave a lighter footprint on the planet. The entire “Eroica for the environment” initiative is structured to comply with the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) for sustainable events, reinforcing Eroica’s genuine commitment to building a better future — step by step, pedal by pedal.
Ride with us toward a greener future.
Every kilometer is a gesture of love for this land.
